Continue reading »]]> Releasing the Past: The First Step to Rebuilding

When it comes to money, almost everyone has a story lately. Unfortunately, many of the stories I’m hearing these days are filled with hard times, bad luck, loss, sadness, anger and resentment. Don’t get me wrong, I know that these stories are real and that there is pain and hardship associated with them….which I have deep compassion for.But as a Money Coach, I know all too well the dangers of becoming trapped in your story and the potentially disabling effect that it can have on your life. I know that many of you have been deeply impacted by this financial crisis and recession, but I want you to know that your financial circumstances are not who you are, so please…don’t become identified with them personally.

It is essential that you process your story (i.e. what happened to you) quickly so that you can move it outside of your being before it has a chance to take permanent residence. You must find a way to forgive and release what has happened, whether it was the loss of your home, your job, or your investments. Let it be done so that you can be free to move forward into the future and to creating the life you do want.

When we fail to release the past, we simply carry it with us everywhere. Over time, we can begin to identify with our story and the past so closely that we miss out on the present and the future simply becomes a repeat performance of yesterday. This is called an “unconscious self-fulfilling prophecy” and it is impossible to win at life when we are trapped inside this vicious cycle. The next phase of your life is actually waiting for you now. But you are only free to claim it when you willing to release the past, and to forgive yourself and others.

People ask me all the time to share my story with them and I always respond the same way. I tell them that my story is no longer real or very interesting to me. Telling it feels more like a fictional tale that I occasionally entertain myself with. It amuses, but doesn’t truly interest me. However, if you ask me to share with you something about my life today and my vision for the future…now that’s a story I’m excited to share.

What has happened to you and to most of us, in this economic meltdown is real, but it isn’t who you are. Unless of course, you let it be by not learning from the experience and letting it go. Resist the temptation of becoming a “victim” of your circumstances and story. Instead, I challenge you to become the “victorious” hero or heroine in your own “Divine Drama” (or comedy, if you choose!) We can begin to do this by taking inventory of all that we still have and all that we’ve have gained, in spite our losses. Sometimes, it is necessary to lose everything in order to

regain everything and to rebuild from a place of balance and gratitude for what really matters. You have it within you to begin again. I invite you to begin writing the next chapter of your “Divine Drama” today.

Judah Freed is an international journalist and the author of the award-winning book, Global Sense, featured on C-SPAN’s Book TV. Judah brings proven interviewing talents to his Global Sense Show. Entering journalism in 1976, Judah Ken Freed covered local news in Colorado through the 1980s. He helped launch Westword, then edited the Denver edition of Colorado Daily and The Denver Downtowner.

Starting in the 1990′s, he pioneered coverage of digital television and the Internet for the top U.S. and European media trade magazines, including Cablevision, Multicahnnel News, Inter@ctive Week, Euromedia, and TV Technology. He specialized in the development of interactive TV and distance learning. Financial Times in the UK published his 1998 book, Opportunities in Educational Television.

Most recently, Judah Freed served as editor of the international Mankind Project Journal. He writes occasional national media and politics columns for Examiner.com. He chiefly works as the special sections editor for The Garden Island newspaper on Kauai in Hawaii, where he moved in late 2010 to get married and build a new life with his new wife.

Beyond journalism, Judah qualifies as a an “old radio hand.” After rising in his youth from disk jockey to program director of his college radio station in southern Colorado, he later produced cultural affairs stories for Voice of America in the 1980s and news reports for NPR’s regional Thin Air series in the 1990s. From 2006 through 2009, he hosted the Metro talk show on public radio station KGNU in Denver.

ABOUT MICHAEL SILVERSTEIN

Mr. Silverstein joined The Boston Consulting Group in 1980. He is a leader of BCG’s consumer practice, and originated many of our qualitative and quantitative research technology. His groundbreaking research with 20,000 women in 21 countries led to the popular 2009 book, Women Want More. This book is the story of the rising female economy – a $5 trillion global growth opportunity. Mr. Silverstein’s prior research focused on luxury goods and discount products. Both led to two books: Trading Up (2003) and Treasure Hunt (2006).

Michael’s current research topic is code-named Boomerang. This is the story of how rising affluence among Chinese and Indian consumers will pressure the supply for consumer products, commodities, energy and water. He has begun active qualitative and quantitative research in India and China, comparing and contrasting consumption, consumption growth across markets. A book and film documentary is scheduled for early 2012.In addition, Michael very actively serves multinational clients in retail and consumer products businesses. He is an expert in understanding and responding to consumer needs and dissatisfactions and helping large consumer companies to grow.

Michael is the author of two Harvard Business Review articles, and more than 20 BCG publications. He has been extensively quoted on CBS, ABC, NBC, CNBC, Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The London Times, The Economist, The Washington Post, and other publications. During his 30 years at BCG, Mr. Silverstein was a member of the BCG Executive Committee and global leader of our Client Service Initiative and global Consumer Practice leader. Prior to joining The Boston Consulting Group, Mr. Silverstein worked at United Press International as a reporter and later in new product development. He holds an MBA with distinction from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration and a BA in economics and history from Brown University.
